Ein besonderes Augenmerk wird dabei auf die sprachpolitischen Konflikte zwischen den niederländischen und den britischen Imperatoren gelegt werden. Darauf folgt ein Exkurs zur identitätsstiftenden Wirkung des Afrikaans, und dessen Rolle während der Apartheid. Zum Schluss soll noch auf die Rolle der Sprachen in dem seit 1994 demokratischen Südafrika eingegangen werden. Auch die Probleme, die durch die Institutionalisierung der Vielsprachigkeit entstanden sind, sollen in diesem Teilbereich angesprochen werden.
